Role of prostate in man´s life

The main function of the prostate is to help protect quality of sperm and therefore is essential for male fertility.
How does it work practically?
First, the prostate produces prostatic fluid, an additional fluid to the ejaculate that protects sperm, helping the sperm cells to live longer and be more mobile. This milky fluid makes up about 30% of total ejaculate (the rest is sperm from testes and fluid from the seminal vesicles).
Second, the prostate contracts during ejaculation and squirts its fluid into the urethra. While contracting, prostate closes up the opening between the bladder and urethra and pushes semen through at speed. This is why it is impossible to urinate and ejaculate at the same time.

Have you heard about PSA?
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is one of the enzymes contained in prostatic fluid. After ejaculation, PSA helps sperm travel more easily by making  semen runnier. Scientists have found out that PSA level is increased when pathological changes occur in prostate. As PSA is easily detectable in blood, it plays an important role in determining benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate cancer.
